The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced steps to resolve the ongoing tension between Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, and the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
For several years, there has been an underlying rift between the Dormaa Paramount Chief and the Asantehene—a situation that has raised concern due to the high stature of both traditional leaders.
The tension intensified after Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II accused the Asantehene of fueling a violent chieftaincy crisis in Sampa, located in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region. He also contested Otumfuo’s authority to elevate the Fiapre Traditional Council to paramountcy, going as far as vowing to abdicate his throne should the Asantehene succeed.
This development has sparked heated debates on social media, with supporters of both chiefs engaging in sharp exchanges, often using unprintable language.
Former Chieftaincy Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, had earlier urged the National House of Chiefs to step in and help mediate the dispute.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on Monday, September 8, Ahmed Ibrahim, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Banda, revealed that consultations are already underway.
“I have engaged some prominent Ghanaians to help address the issue. Dormaahene is a father to me, just as Otumfuo is. These are some of the most powerful kings in the country, and their contributions to resolving national issues are invaluable,” the Minister said.
