Former Health Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has urged the Mahama-led government to apologise to Ghanaians for its failure to address the worsening issue of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Dr. Okoe Boye criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for abandoning key campaign promises made ahead of the 2024 general elections.
He pointed out that one of those promises was the bold pledge to declare a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas—a commitment that, according to him, has been ignored since the party assumed office.
Citing former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Dr. Okoe Boye stated: “If you use dishonest means to win power, it’s acceptable to change course and use honest means to solve the problem; but first of all, apologise to us.”
He therefore called on the government to acknowledge its shortcomings, offer an apology to the public, and adopt a more transparent and effective strategy to combat illegal mining, which continues to endanger the environment and local communities.
