Addressing a high-level meeting of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in New York on Monday, Mr. Mahama stressed that Africa’s future depends on building resilient health systems supported by sustainable financing.
“Health is not a cost. It is the engine of productivity and the foundation of sovereignty,” he stated.
The meeting, themed “Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness”, gathered heads of state and government ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
Deliberations focused on strengthening Africa’s health sovereignty in the post-COVID-19 era, with emphasis on local vaccine production, sustainable healthcare funding, and pandemic readiness.
On Tuesday, President Mahama will continue this conversation by hosting a side event titled “The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development” at 8:00 p.m. GMT. The session will bring together policymakers and global partners to explore innovative frameworks for health governance and international cooperation.
His contributions underscore Africa’s drive toward self-reliance in health financing and preparedness, aimed at protecting the continent from future global health crises.
