This referral follows a letter from President John Mahama, dated October 14, 2025, in which he submitted Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s name to the House for approval, in line with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
During the commencement of the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, Speaker Bagbin read the President’s communication, stating, “I have the honour to respectfully submit, for the approval of Parliament, the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.”
In his remarks to the Appointments Committee, the Speaker urged Members of Parliament to actively support the vetting process. He noted that while he may contribute to the committee’s discussions, he would refrain from participating in any voting.
Bagbin emphasized the importance of conducting the vetting in accordance with the country’s laws, assuring the House, “We trust that this will be done properly. Ultimately, we will ensure that confidence in the arms of government is restored and enhanced.”
