Former Roads and Highways Minister and Bantama MP, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has dismissed claims by former President John Dramani Mahama over the financing of the Ofankor–Nsawam Road project, stressing that the facts are clearly captured in the Ministry’s official handing-over notes.
During a site visit on Wednesday, September 3, President Mahama suggested that government had secured a loan to fully fund the project and questioned why construction remained unfinished.
Responding in a statement on his Facebook page, Mr. Asenso-Boakye explained that the rehabilitation of the 33-kilometer dual carriageway was awarded at a cost of $346.4 million. He clarified that government obtained $200 million from Afreximbank as partial funding, with the remaining amount to be financed through budgetary allocations.
“It is misleading for the former President to claim that the Afreximbank loan was fully utilized while the project is still incomplete. The handing-over notes clearly indicate that the facility provided only part of the required funding,” he emphasized.
He urged Mr. Mahama to refer to the official records before making public pronouncements, warning that misrepresenting facts for political gain only erodes public confidence in infrastructure delivery.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye further called on Ghanaians to ignore what he described as “political distortions” and rather support transparency and steady progress in the execution of national projects.
